Practical overview
When it fits
Use Solc Select when Solidity development requires managing more than one compiler release or selecting a particular release from the command line.
Who it is for
- Smart-contract developers who need to switch between Solidity compiler releases.
- Development teams maintaining projects that require different compiler versions.
- Developers automating compiler installation in a command-line environment.
Documented uses
- Install a specific Solidity compiler version.
- Switch the global `solc` selection to an installed version.
- Override the global selection with the `SOLC_VERSION` environment variable.
- Check which compiler version the wrapper reports.
Requirements & limits
The project is distributed under the AGPL-3.0 license. Installation instructions are provided for uv and pip.
- The
solcwrapper uses the version selected throughsolc-select, whileSOLC_VERSIONcan override the global selection. - Compiler binaries are downloaded from binaries.soliditylang.org and stored in
~/.solc-select/artifacts/. - The README documents different ARM requirements by operating system and compiler version.
- The project warns that other Solidity installations may interfere with which
solcexecutable is used.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and select a Solidity compiler version
Install Solc Select, select a Solidity version and check the compiler version reported by its wrapper.
Before you start
- A Linux or macOS environment.
- Python package installation through uv or pip.
Steps
Install Solc Select with the command below or the command below.
uv tool install solc-selectpip3 install solc-selectRun
solc-select use --always-installto install and select the desired version.Run
solc --versionto display the selected compiler version.
Expected outcome
The `solc` wrapper reports the selected Solidity compiler version.
Guide limitations
- The selected compiler binary must be executable on the system's architecture; older macOS ARM and Linux ARM versions have additional requirements.
- Other Solidity installations can cause the
solccommand to resolve to a different compiler.
