Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a local, modifiable research workflow for Chinese spelling correction using SIGHAN data and a Chinese BERT checkpoint.
Who it is for
- Researchers studying Chinese spelling-error detection and correction
- Developers adapting a PyTorch baseline for Chinese spelling-correction experiments
Documented uses
- Preprocess SIGHAN spelling-correction data
- Train the model using downloaded Chinese BERT checkpoint weights
- Run the documented test workflow on prepared data
- Adjust training and evaluation parameters through command-line options
Requirements & limits
The project is published as a public GitHub repository under the MIT license.
- It is an unofficial implementation based on Hugging Face Transformers.
- The documented setup requires Python 3.6 or later, repository dependencies, SIGHAN files, a training corpus and downloaded bert-base-chinese weights.
- The CLI documents CPU and CUDA device selection.
- The reported experiment used 10 epochs on processed data and notes that it did not include the extensive pretraining described in the paper.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Train and test the model
Run the repository's documented training and test modes after preparing its data and checkpoint.
Before you start
- Prepared data and pretrained weights as described in the setup guide
- Python dependencies installed from requirements.txt
Steps
Start training with the command below.
python main.py --mode trainRun testing with the command below.
python main.py --mode testConsult the available run and training parameters with the command below; documented options include device selection, GPU index, checkpoint loading, epochs, batch size, learning rate, and loss weight.
python main.py --help
Expected outcome
The repository's training and test modes are invoked, with additional command-line options available for configuration.
Guide limitations
- The README does not give a separate inference command for arbitrary input text.
- Reported results are from a 10-epoch experiment on processed data; the author notes underfitting and less pretraining than in the paper.
