Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want repeatable simulation-based policy comparisons or a scalable complement to operationally expensive physical-robot evaluation.
Who it is for
- Robotics researchers comparing manipulation policies or checkpoints.
- Developers reproducing Google Robot and WidowX+Bridge policy evaluations.
- Teams studying how visual or scene variations affect simulated evaluation results.
Documented uses
- Evaluate manipulation policies in prepackaged simulated robot environments.
- Compare policy checkpoints using quantitative simulation results.
- Reproduce policy evaluations for RT-1, RT-1-X and Octo in documented setups.
- Assess results under visual matching or multiple scene variants.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. The documented installation uses a local Python environment and NVIDIA GPU; full installation has additional requirements.
- The minimal environment supports simulation setup; evaluating provided RT-1 or Octo agents and adding robots or environments requires the separate full-installation steps.
- The codebase uses SAPIEN and CPU-based ManiSkill2; Bridge dataset environments are also integrated into ManiSkill3 for GPU-parallelized evaluation.
- CUDA 11.8 to below 13 and an NVIDIA GPU are listed prerequisites; TPU is unsupported, and ray-tracing workloads may be slow on non-RTX GPUs.
- Simulation provides informative, standardized evidence but is framed as a complement to real-world evaluation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the minimal SimplerEnv environment
Prepare the documented minimal environment for running SimplerEnv simulations.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or 3.11 in an Anaconda environment
- NVIDIA GPU
- CUDA 11.8 or later and below 13
- Git and pip
Steps
Create and activate an Anaconda environment named simpler_env with Python 3.10 or 3.11.
Clone the SimplerEnv repository with its submodules.
Install NumPy 1.24.4.
From the repository, install ManiSkill2_real2sim in editable mode, then install SimplerEnv in editable mode.
Expected outcome
The README's minimal environment and package installation steps are completed; it then points to a sample script for using a prepackaged visual-matching environment.
Guide limitations
- This is setup guidance; it does not cover running a policy evaluation.
- Full installation instructions are additionally required to evaluate provided RT-1 or Octo agents or add robots and environments.
- The README notes that ray-tracing environments can be slow on non-RTX GPUs and TPU is unsupported.
