Practical overview
When it fits
Use Sim when you need to construct and manage connected AI-agent workflows, especially for internal automation or knowledge access, rather than only consume a prebuilt assistant.
Who it is for
- Teams building internal AI automations
- Developers creating connected agent workflows
- Organizations exploring self-hosted knowledge-base assistants
Documented uses
- Build AI agents and multi-step workflows
- Connect agents with business tools, databases, files, knowledge bases, and structured table data
- Deploy and monitor agent workflows
- Create low-code or visual automations for internal use
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies an Apache-2.0 license. The technical profile lists web, macOS, self-hosted, and cloud platforms.
- Whether visual, conversational, or code-based workflow construction matches the team’s development style
- The need to connect agents with business tools, databases, files, knowledge bases, or structured data
- Whether Apache-2.0 open-source licensing and TypeScript implementation fit the project
- Whether web, macOS, self-hosted, or cloud access aligns with the intended deployment approach
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a self-hosted Sim deployment with the interactive wizard
Create a local Sim deployment, provision its database and secrets, connect a Chat API key, and start the published Sim images.
Before you start
- Node.js 20 or newer
- Docker
Steps
Run the command below to start the interactive setup wizard.
npx sim-setupLet the wizard create the
sim/deployment directory, provision the database, generate secrets, write.env, and connect a Chat API key.Let the wizard start the published Sim images with Docker Compose.
When setup finishes, open
http://localhost:3000.
Expected outcome
A self-hosted Sim deployment is started locally and is available at `http://localhost:3000`.
Guide limitations
- The wizard creates a deployment directory and does not clone the repository.
- Source-only local development and Kubernetes modes require a cloned Sim repository and
bun run sim-setup. - The evidence documents setup and opening the local interface, but not building or running a specific workflow.
