Practical overview
When it fits
Consider Sgxwallet when an Ethereum or SKALE service needs a centrally operated, hardware-backed signing endpoint and its operators can manage SGX infrastructure and client registration.
Who it is for
- SKALE validators setting up a wallet server for testnet or mainnet use.
- Developers integrating a server-side signing endpoint into Ethereum or SKALE services.
- Operators who can administer client-certificate registration and run an SGX-capable server.
Documented uses
- Provide a network endpoint for clients to request key generation and cryptographic operations.
- Keep generated keys inside an Intel SGX enclave rather than exposing them outside the enclave unencrypted.
- Approve client registrations before clients authenticate to the service.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists the AGPL-3.0 license. Client access uses TLS 1.0 certificates, and an administrator manually approves initial registrations.
- The project is alpha software and may undergo security hardening, further testing, and breaking changes.
- The repository states that the server has not been reviewed or audited for security.
- Production deployment requires SGX-capable hardware; the simulation mode is explicitly not for production.
- The repository describes Ubuntu Linux 20.04 as tested and requires Docker Compose for its documented simulation operation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start Sgxwallet in simulation mode
Try the server in an insecure simulation that emulates an SGX processor.
Before you start
- A Linux machine with Intel AVX512 support.
- Docker and Docker Compose.
- The Sgxwallet repository and its submodules.
Steps
Clone the repository with its submodules.
Install Docker and Docker Compose if needed.
From the repository, enter run_sgx_sim and start the service with Docker Compose.
Expected outcome
The server starts in simulation mode for trying its operation.
Guide limitations
- Simulation mode is insecure and is only for trying Sgxwallet; do not use it for production.
- Production operation requires an SGX-capable server.
- The repository says to use Docker Compose rather than raw Docker tools.
