Practical overview
When it fits
Use Scholarcopilot when exploring AI-assisted academic drafting that can retrieve references during generation, or when setting up research workflows around its model and paper corpus.
Who it is for
- Researchers seeking AI-assisted scholarly drafting and citation suggestions.
- Developers who want to run the demo or adapt its generation and retrieval workflow.
- Research teams reproducing or training an academic-writing model.
Documented uses
- Draft the next three sentences in the context of existing text.
- Generate a complete section with academic structure and flow.
- Retrieve relevant papers and suggest where citations may fit.
- Insert citations and generate or export BibTeX entries.
- Update the paper corpus and build embeddings and an HNSW retrieval index.
Requirements & limits
The public GitHub repository is identified as MIT-licensed. The README documents setting up the demo on a server.
- The model integrates retrieval into text generation, using a learned citation point to fetch references and then continue writing.
- The documented demo setup requires installing Python dependencies and downloading model and data files.
- The corpus workflow specifically documents processing arXiv metadata, embedding papers, and building an HNSW index.
- Training reproduction is resource-intensive: the README describes using four machines with eight GPUs each, 32 GPUs total.
- The README advises checking retrieved references against the claims they are used to support.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the Scholarcopilot demo on a server
Prepare and launch the documented demo in a server environment.
Before you start
- A server with a Python environment.
- Access to the Scholarcopilot Git repository and its required model and data downloads.
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its run_demo directory.
Install the dependencies with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Run bash download.sh to download the required model and data.
Launch the demo with bash run_demo.sh.
Expected outcome
The repository's demo is launched on the server.
Guide limitations
- The README does not specify hardware requirements for running the demo.
- Generated references should be checked against the claims they are used to support.
Refresh the paper corpus and build its retrieval index
Process new arXiv metadata and create embeddings and an HNSW index for the paper collection.
Before you start
- Recent arXiv metadata downloaded from Kaggle and saved at a chosen ARXIV_META_DATA_PATH.
- The Scholarcopilot repository and its corpus-processing scripts.
Steps
Run python process_arxiv_meta_data.py ARXIV_META_DATA_PATH ../data/corpus_data_arxiv_1215.jsonl from the utils directory.
Generate corpus embeddings with bash encode_corpus.sh.
Build an HNSW index with python build_hnsw_index.py --input_dir --output_dir .
Expected outcome
The workflow produces processed corpus data, embeddings, and an HNSW index for retrieval.
Guide limitations
- The README describes the index-building workflow but does not document how to connect the refreshed index to a particular writing editor.
