Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to check for or create a Bitcoin-based time proof for specific text or an image, such as a damage photograph or a written idea.
Who it is for
- People who want a time-based proof for a photograph documenting damage.
- People who want to record that a written idea existed by a particular time.
Documented uses
- Check whether a selected picture or entered text already has a proof and see its reported time.
- Initiate a new proof for text or an image by transferring Bitcoin to a calculated address.
Requirements & limits
The project is an Android app. Its README links to Google Play and F-Droid listings. The repository identifies the app as GPLv3-licensed.
- A new proof involves transferring Bitcoin to a calculated address; the README describes one Satoshi as the default and says the amount can be increased.
- The README warns that network signing can take time, especially with very small amounts.
- The app is described as checking address existence through an API, while the proof itself uses the Bitcoin network.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Check or create a Bitcoin proof for text or an image
Check whether a text or picture already has a proof of existence, and, if not, start a proof through the app.
Before you start
- The SatoshiProof Android app.
- Text to enter or a picture to select.
- Bitcoin to transfer if creating a new proof.
Steps
Select a picture or enter text in the app.
Let the app check whether its existence is already proven; if so, it displays the proof time.
If no proof is found, choose the option to prove it now by transferring one Satoshi to the calculated address.
Wait for the Bitcoin network to sign the proof.
Expected outcome
The app displays the time for an existing proof, or initiates a new proof that can be signed by the Bitcoin network.
Guide limitations
- Network signing can take time, especially for the one-Satoshi amount; the README says the amount can be increased for faster signing.
- The README notes that the transferred money may go nowhere or to a random stranger.
