Rsz

Rsz is a Python command-line utility that parses Bitcoin transactions and reports ECDSA signature R, S and Z values alongside the public key for each input. It accepts either raw transaction data or a transaction ID; the latter invokes a blockchain API to retrieve the raw transaction.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Rsz when you need per-input ECDSA signature values from Bitcoin transaction data, either from a raw transaction or by looking up a transaction ID.

Who it is for

  • Developers inspecting Bitcoin transaction signatures
  • Researchers working with ECDSA signature data from transaction inputs

Documented uses

  • Extract R, S, Z and public-key values from each input in raw transaction data.
  • Retrieve a transaction's raw data by transaction ID before extracting its signature values.

Requirements & limits

The repository identifies an MIT license. The documented tool runs with Python 3; transaction-ID lookup requires internet access, while raw-transaction input is documented to work without it.

  • Raw transaction mode avoids the documented API lookup and internet requirement.
  • Transaction-ID mode depends on internet access and a blockchain API.
  • The README lists three required library files obtainable from the secp256k1 repository.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Extract signature values from a raw Bitcoin transaction

Use a raw transaction as input to obtain R, S, Z and public-key values for its inputs.

Before you start

  • Python 3
  • The three required library files available from the secp256k1 repository
  • Raw Bitcoin transaction data

Steps

  1. Obtain the required library files from the linked secp256k1 repository.

  2. Run the documented script, getz_input.py, with the -rawtx option and the raw transaction data.

Expected outcome

Rsz reports R, S, Z and the public key for each transaction input.

Guide limitations

  • The raw-transaction mode is documented as not requiring internet access.
  • The guide covers extraction only; it does not describe further analysis of the reported values.
Source-based practical guide

Look up a transaction by ID and extract signature values

Fetch a Bitcoin transaction's raw data through the blockchain API and report signature values for its inputs.

Before you start

  • Python 3
  • The three required library files available from the secp256k1 repository
  • A Bitcoin transaction ID
  • Internet access

Steps

  1. Obtain the required library files from the linked secp256k1 repository.

  2. Run getz_input.py with the -txid option and the transaction ID.

Expected outcome

Rsz retrieves the raw transaction and reports R, S, Z and the public key for each input.

Guide limitations

  • This mode requires internet access and uses a blockchain API.
