Practical overview
When it fits
Use ReVa when you want an MCP-compatible AI client to interact with Ghidra tools during binary analysis, either in a live project or a headless workflow.
Who it is for
- Reverse engineers who want an AI client to work with an open Ghidra project.
- Teams automating Ghidra analysis in headless or CI/CD workflows.
- Developers integrating Ghidra analysis with MCP clients or PyGhidra scripts.
Documented uses
- Ask questions about a binary and inspect strings, functions, algorithms, or encryption use.
- Rename variables, correct data types, and build a detailed program summary.
- Compare binaries and investigate differences.
- Run analysis interactively or in headless automation.
Requirements & limits
ReVa is an open-source project under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a Ghidra extension and supports Ghidra 12.0 and above.
- Choose assistant mode for work alongside the Ghidra UI; choose headless mode for automation or CI/CD.
- An MCP client is needed for AI-assisted interaction; Claude Code is the README’s recommended client.
- Headless projects are session-scoped and automatically cleaned up.
- ReVa can be used alongside other MCP servers to add sources such as GitHub code or web search to an analysis workflow.
- If exposing the server on a public interface, account for the scripting tools by enabling API-key authentication or disabling those tools.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and enable the ReVa Ghidra extension
Add ReVa to Ghidra and activate its application and Code Browser plugins.
Before you start
- Ghidra 12.0 or above
- A ReVa release matching the Ghidra version, or the source repository and Gradle for a source build
Steps
Install the matching release through Ghidra’s extension manager, or clone the repository, set GHIDRA_INSTALL_DIR to the Ghidra installation path, and run gradle install.
In Ghidra’s Project view, open File > Configure, choose Configure all plugins, and enable ReVa Application Plugin.
In the Code Browser, open File > Configure, enable ReVa Plugin, then choose File > Save Tool.
Expected outcome
The ReVa extension and its application and Code Browser plugins are enabled in Ghidra.
Guide limitations
- This setup does not configure an MCP client or describe an analysis session.
- If ReVa listens on a public interface, the README advises enabling API-key authentication or disabling scripting tools.
Connect an MCP client in assistant mode
Connect Claude Code to a ReVa server running in an open Ghidra project.
Before you start
- Ghidra 12.0 or above with ReVa installed and enabled
- An open Ghidra project
- Claude Code
Steps
Start Ghidra and open the project.
Use the configured ReVa MCP server address; its default port is 8080.
Run claude mcp add --scope user --transport http ReVa -- http://localhost:8080/mcp/message.
In Claude Code, check the connection with /mcp.
Expected outcome
Claude Code can connect to ReVa’s MCP server for interactive work with the open Ghidra project.
Guide limitations
- The guide covers assistant mode, not headless setup.
- The default server address assumes ReVa remains on localhost and its default port.
