Practical overview
When it fits
Use Remix Project when contract work benefits from an IDE that combines Solidity development, compilation and transaction debugging, especially when browser, desktop, offline or self-managed local workflows are relevant.
Who it is for
- Solidity smart-contract developers
- Ethereum and EVM application builders
- Developers who need transaction debugging during contract development
- Contributors or tool builders working with Remix plugins and libraries
Documented uses
- Write and compile Solidity smart contracts
- Build Ethereum and EVM applications
- Debug blockchain transactions
- Run a Remix development environment online, locally, through desktop software or as an offline build
- Extend or reuse Remix components through its plugin engine and libraries
Requirements & limits
The project documents an online IDE, desktop IDE, VS Code extension and offline usage. Its repository also documents local source and Docker workflows. Browser support is specified for Firefox 100.0.1 and Chrome 101.0.4951.64, with no tablet or smartphone support stated in the README. The repository is public, open source and licensed under Apache-2.0.
- The main workflow is centered on Ethereum and EVM smart-contract development.
- Solidity is the primary documented contract language, with repository topics also identifying Vyper.
- Transaction debugging is a documented core capability.
- The project offers several deployment forms: online, desktop, VS Code extension, offline package and local Docker or source builds.
- Local source setup requires Node.js, Yarn and Nx CLI, while Docker use requires Docker and optionally Docker Compose.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build and run Remix Project locally
Set up the repository and serve a local Remix IDE instance.
Before you start
- Node.js with the documented supported engine version
- npm with the documented supported engine version
- Yarn
- Nx CLI installed globally
- A cloned copy of the GitHub repository
Steps
Install Yarn and Node.js.
Install Nx CLI globally with
yarn global add nx.Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Install dependencies, build the Remix libraries, build the project, and run
yarn serve.Open
http://127.0.0.1:8080in a browser.
Expected outcome
A locally served Remix IDE instance available at the documented local address.
Guide limitations
- The documented browser support names Firefox 100.0.1 and Chrome 101.0.4951.64.
- The repository states that tablets and smartphones are not supported.
- The setup instructions require the documented Node.js and npm versions.
Run Remix Project with Docker
Serve a Remix IDE instance locally using the documented Docker workflow.
Before you start
- Docker
- Docker Compose for the Compose workflow
Steps
Pull the documented Remix IDE image.
Run the image with port 8080 mapped to port 80, or obtain the Docker Compose file.
For Compose, pull the services and start them in detached mode.
Open
http://localhost:8080.
Expected outcome
A locally accessible Remix instance at the documented local address.
Guide limitations
- The instructions distinguish between the latest merged master image and the remix-live release image.
- The Docker workflow requires Docker; the Compose workflow additionally requires Docker Compose.
