Practical overview
When it fits
Use Rekal when an AI coding workflow needs persistent, repository-local context about decisions across sessions, or when a team wants that context to follow merged work through Git.
Who it is for
- Developers using AI coding agents who want to retrieve the reasoning behind earlier code changes.
- Teams that want relevant coding-session context to travel with merged repository work through Git.
Documented uses
- Recall why a past implementation decision was made.
- Find approaches already tried and rejected before proposing them again.
- Share coding-session context with teammates through normal Git push and fetch workflows.
Requirements & limits
The README says no account or memory service is required. Listed prerequisites are Git and macOS on Apple Silicon or Linux on x86-64 or arm64.
- Memory is stored in the repository and shared with teammates through existing Git push and fetch operations.
- Indexing and embeddings are described as local; the README says recall works offline.
- The documented shell setup initializes memory per repository, while the Claude Code route includes machine-level installation.
- The README describes a bundled binary of approximately 170 MB to download and 200 MB on disk.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up repository memory from a shell
Install Rekal, initialize it in a repository, and follow the documented commit-and-recall workflow.
Before you start
- Git
- macOS on Apple Silicon or Linux on x86-64 or arm64
- A repository to initialize
Steps
Install the Rekal binary using the documented install script or download a release binary.
Change to the project repository and run
rekal init.Commit work as usual; Rekal captures the associated AI coding-session context at commits.
In a later session, ask Rekal a question about an earlier decision.
Expected outcome
Session context is stored in the repository for later agent recall, and merged work can travel to teammates through Git push and fetch.
Guide limitations
- The README describes a command-line workflow and lists macOS Apple Silicon and Linux x86-64 or arm64 as requirements.
- The binary is described as approximately 170 MB to download and 200 MB on disk.
