Practical overview
When it fits
Use Rawbit to study, construct or inspect Bitcoin transaction flows and debug Script execution, especially when a visual representation and access to the underlying calculations are useful.
Who it is for
- Educators explaining Bitcoin transaction structure
- Auditors inspecting transaction flows and scripts
- Developers exploring Bitcoin protocols at the byte and Script level
Documented uses
- Assemble transaction components such as inputs, outputs, scripts, signatures and witnesses in a visual flow.
- Inspect how changes affect preimages, signatures, transaction IDs, fees and weight.
- Trace Script execution opcode by opcode and observe stack changes.
- Load and adapt examples covering legacy transactions, SegWit, Taproot, MuSig2 and payment channels.
Requirements & limits
The project describes both an online version and local operation. Its README says the hosted version sends calculation data to a backend; local installation is the documented option for users who need calculations to remain on their machine.
- The editor combines a node-based canvas with access to the Python function behind calculation nodes.
- Built-in examples span multiple Bitcoin transaction eras and constructions.
- Local setup requires Node.js, npm, Python, pip, a C compiler toolchain and libsecp256k1 headers.
- The project is not a wallet, broadcaster or custody tool and cautions against handling real funds.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Rawbit locally
Start the documented local frontend and backend for working with transaction flows.
Before you start
- Node.js 18 or later and npm
- Python 3.12 or later with pip
- A C compiler toolchain and libsecp256k1 headers
Steps
Clone the Rawbit repository and change into its directory.
Install frontend dependencies with npm install, then start the Vite development server with npm run dev.
In a second terminal, create and activate a Python virtual environment.
Install requirements.txt and requirements-special.txt, then start the backend with python3 backend/routes.py.
Open the local frontend at http://localhost:3041/.
Expected outcome
The local frontend connects to the documented backend at http://localhost:5007/ for calculations.
Guide limitations
- The backend uses a forked python-bitcointx dependency pinned in requirements-special.txt.
- Rawbit is educational software; the project advises using testnet or regtest rather than real funds.
