Practical overview
When it fits
Use lexical search when the target wording or keywords are known; use semantic search when looking for passages related to a concept or topic.
Who it is for
- Quran readers looking for verses by keyword or topic.
- Scholars, Muslim researchers, and Arabic enthusiasts exploring Quranic passages.
- Developers interested in an NLP-based Quran information retrieval application.
Documented uses
- Find verses containing a sequence of keywords.
- Locate passages related to a conceptual topic or query meaning.
- Review ranked semantic results alongside lexically retrieved verse text.
- Set up the documented development application locally.
Requirements & limits
The project is published as a public GitHub repository under the GPL-3.0 license. The README documents a local development setup.
- Lexical results are displayed in Surah and verse order; semantic results are ranked by similarity.
- The README describes up to the first 50 results.
- Semantic ranking combines several Word2Vec-based sentence-vector methods.
- The documented setup downloads a light pre-trained model and starts the application’s services through helper scripts.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and open the development application
Prepare the documented local development setup and open its web interface.
Before you start
- A clone of the project repository.
- The project’s helper scripts and requirements.
- A light pre-trained model downloaded through the setup helper.
Steps
From the repository root, run the command below to download a light model and install requirements.
sh scripts/start.shFrom the repository root, run the command below to start the lexical API, semantic API, and frontend.
sh scripts/run.shOpen
http://localhost:3000in a browser. When finished, run the command below to stop the background servers.
sh scripts/down.sh
Expected outcome
The development web interface is available locally while the project services are running.
Guide limitations
- The README specifies that commands must be run from the project root.
- This is a development setup guide; it does not describe production deployment.
