Practical overview
When it fits
Consider it when a PostgreSQL schema or query workload needs fixed-width large integers or hexadecimal values with operators, rather than representing those values only with generic text or numeric fields.
Who it is for
- Developers building web3 or blockchain applications on PostgreSQL.
- Database operators who need fixed-width large integers or hexadecimal values to support database-level operations.
Documented uses
- Represent large signed and unsigned integers as typed PostgreSQL values.
- Store hexadecimal values such as Ethereum addresses and block hashes in fixed-width types.
- Compare, perform arithmetic on, or apply bitwise operations to supported values in PostgreSQL.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists the MIT license. The project documents Linux/amd64 container images and a compile-and-install path.
- The supported types are int128, uint128, int256, uint256, hex160 and hex256.
- Hexadecimal inputs are case-insensitive, unprefixed base-16 strings; output is lowercase and does not preserve input case.
- Unsigned types accept the negative string -0 for compatibility, but not other negative integer strings.
- Signed-to-unsigned integer casts are not implicit.
- The documented container image availability is limited to a modified Alpine PostgreSQL variant, with linux/amd64 images listed.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Enable Postgres WEB3 in an installed PostgreSQL instance
Make the extension available in a database after installing it.
Before you start
- A PostgreSQL instance.
- Postgres WEB3 compiled and installed in the PostgreSQL environment.
Steps
Compile and install the extension using the project’s documented installation process.
In the target database, execute
CREATE EXTENSION postgres_web3.
Expected outcome
The extension is enabled in the target database, allowing its documented data types to be used there.
Guide limitations
- The available container images are for linux/amd64; the project says images may build on other platforms.
- The README identifies a modified Alpine PostgreSQL image as the currently available image variant.
