Practical overview
When it fits
Use Polar when a Lightning application needs a local, controllable network for development or testing, particularly when testing node interactions, channels, invoices or Taproot Assets.
Who it is for
- Lightning application developers who need local networks for development and testing.
- Developers testing node, channel, invoice or Taproot Asset interactions.
- Teams sharing local network configurations with other Lightning developers.
- AI-agent developers interested in controlling Lightning simulations through Polar's MCP server.
Documented uses
- Create one or more local regtest Lightning networks.
- Connect an application to local Lightning nodes through RPC.
- Add nodes, start or stop them, manage channels and test invoice flows.
- Mine regtest blocks, deposit regtest coins and inspect node logs or terminals.
- Test Taproot Asset issuance and transfer flows.
Requirements & limits
Polar is described as open source and MIT-licensed. The project README lists desktop downloads for Mac, Linux and Windows. Docker is required to create local networks; Docker Desktop on Linux is currently unsupported.
- Docker is required for local network creation; Linux users need Docker Server rather than Docker Desktop.
- Check the project's supported node-version list when matching Polar to an application environment.
- Applications connect to local Lightning nodes through RPC.
- Polar's MCP server is a distinct programmatic-control route, with installation instructions in the separate polar-mcp repository.
- Custom nodes use Docker images.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare Polar to create local networks
Install the documented Docker prerequisite and obtain the Polar desktop application.
Before you start
- Docker: Docker Desktop on Mac or Windows, or Docker Server on Linux.
- A Polar download for the operating system: Mac, Linux or Windows.
Steps
Install the Docker option specified for your operating system.
Download the Polar desktop package for your operating system from the project's GitHub releases.
Open Polar; the project says it prompts users to install Docker if it cannot detect it automatically.
Expected outcome
The documented prerequisites and desktop application are in place for creating local networks in Polar.
Guide limitations
- Docker is required to create local networks.
- Docker Desktop on Linux is currently unsupported; the project directs Linux users to Docker Server.
- This covers setup prerequisites, not the creation or operation of a network.
