Practical overview
When it fits
Consider it when you need a Windows x64 build of pgvector and the instructions for the selected archive match your PostgreSQL setup. Check the archive-specific directions, particularly for 0.8.x releases.
Who it is for
- PostgreSQL administrators working with Windows x64 installations who need to add the pgvector extension.
- Developers building RAG or other applications that use PostgreSQL for vector retrieval.
Documented uses
- Install and activate pgvector in a PostgreSQL database on Windows x64.
- Check whether the vector extension is registered and inspect its version.
- Use PostgreSQL vector search as a retrieval component for an application.
Requirements & limits
- The repository labels the release unofficial.
- The instructions differ by version: 0.7.3 and 0.7.4 use extraction and SQL activation steps, while 0.8.x users are directed to the archive's readme.txt.
- The README does not provide a full compatibility matrix for PostgreSQL versions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and enable pgvector for PostgreSQL 0.7.3 or 0.7.4
Place the extension files in the PostgreSQL installation and activate the extension in a database.
Before you start
- A PostgreSQL installation on Windows x64.
- The project ZIP for version 0.7.3 or 0.7.4.
Steps
Extract the ZIP contents into the PostgreSQL installation's share/extension directory.
Run CREATE EXTENSION vector in the database.
Run SELECT extname, extrelocatable, extversion FROM pg_extension where extname='vector' to check the extension entry and version.
Expected outcome
The database registers the vector extension, and the query returns its extension name, relocatability value and version when present.
Guide limitations
- These extraction instructions are given for versions 0.7.3 and 0.7.4; the README directs users of 0.8.x to read the instructions inside the archive.
- The repository labels the release unofficial and does not provide a complete PostgreSQL compatibility matrix.
