Practical overview
When it fits
Use it while working in an Overleaf project when you want paper-focused conversation and structured critique or revision without switching away from the editor.
Who it is for
- Researchers drafting or revising academic papers in Overleaf.
- LaTeX authors seeking reviewer-style feedback and structured revision suggestions within their editor.
Documented uses
- Discuss an Overleaf LaTeX document with an AI assistant.
- Organize paper improvement into research, critique and revision passes.
- Generate comments and insert selected AI responses into a project.
- Use literature-grounded research, citation verification and domain-specific revision workflows.
Requirements & limits
The README directs users to install the Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store. Login by Overleaf is documented only for self-hosted backends.
- The standard user workflow requires Chrome and an Overleaf project.
- The assistant is described as reading project content and offering suggestions rather than changing the project automatically.
- The repository is public and licensed under AGPL-3.0.
- The backend documentation lists Go 1.24+, Gin, gRPC, MongoDB, OpenAI API integration, Protocol Buffers, JWT and OAuth.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start a PaperDebugger conversation in Overleaf
Open the assistant on a LaTeX project and begin discussing its contents.
Before you start
- Chrome browser with the PaperDebugger extension installed from the Chrome Web Store
- An Overleaf project
Steps
Install PaperDebugger from the Chrome Web Store.
Open an Overleaf project.
Click the PaperDebugger icon at the top left.
Start chatting with the LaTeX document.
Expected outcome
A chat with the assistant about the open Overleaf project.
Guide limitations
- The extension provides suggestions and does not modify the project by itself; the README describes one-click insertion as a separate feature.
Set a custom backend endpoint
Configure the extension to use a self-hosted PaperDebugger backend.
Before you start
- PaperDebugger extension
- A self-hosted PaperDebugger backend and its URL
Steps
Open the extension settings.
Click the version number five times to enable Developer Tools.
Enter the backend URL in the Backend Endpoint field.
Refresh the page.
Expected outcome
The extension is configured to connect to the entered backend endpoint.
Guide limitations
- Login by Overleaf is available only when self-hosting the backend.
- If endpoint errors occur after refreshing, the README directs users to Advanced Options on the login page to reconfigure.
