Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Orange when you want to explore data or organize data-mining and machine-learning work in a visual application rather than writing code for the workflow.

Who it is for

  • People who want to explore and visualize datasets without programming.
  • Learners and analysts who want to arrange data-mining experiments as visual workflows.
  • Users applying classification, clustering or decision-tree methods through an interactive workbench.

Documented uses

  • Explore data using a visual workflow.
  • Create charts and visualizations as part of data analysis.
  • Apply classification and clustering methods.
  • Examine decision-tree analysis.
  • Extend the toolbox with add-ons for more specific areas.

Requirements & limits

The project documents installers for Windows and macOS, and conda, pip or uv installation for Linux or development. Its pip installation may require a C/C++ compiler; the first launch may take some time.

  • Orange's visual workflow approach is intended to support exploration without programming or in-depth mathematical knowledge.
  • The core application is written in Python, with conda, pip and uv installation paths documented for Linux or development.
  • Add-ons can provide more specialized widgets; installation is documented through the application menu or conda.
  • The pip route may require a C/C++ compiler.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Orange with conda

Create a Python 3.12 conda environment, install Orange and launch its canvas.

Before you start

  • Miniconda installed for your operating system

Steps

  1. Add conda-forge to the conda channels and, if desired, set strict channel priority.

  2. Create and activate an environment named orange3 with Python 3.12.

  3. Install Orange with conda install orange3.

  4. Activate the environment and run python -m Orange.canvas.

Expected outcome

Orange's visual canvas is launched from the orange3 environment.

Guide limitations

  • The project notes that the first launch may take some time.
