Openswarm

Openswarm is a TypeScript-based, MIT-licensed framework for self-hosted AI software-development orchestration. It combines a command-line interface and server-oriented daemon with model-provider adapters, repository review workflows, optional task management, notifications and cognitive repository memory.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an engineering workflow needs AI-assisted review and remediation tied to repository checks, or when a team wants to coordinate longer-running coding tasks through an optional daemon and project-management integration.

Who it is for

  • Software developers reviewing local changes or pull requests.
  • Teams coordinating AI-assisted coding and DevOps tasks.
  • Operators seeking a self-hosted multi-agent workflow with optional Linear and notification integrations.

Documented uses

  • Review committed or working-tree diffs.
  • Fix confirmed findings in isolated sandboxes and re-review changes.
  • Require deterministic repository checks before publishing a pull request.
  • Run individual coding tasks or interact through a terminal UI.
  • Coordinate development work through local SQLite or Linear.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and presents an MIT license. The documented operating model is self-hosted through CLI or server modes. Provider authentication or a local model service is needed for provider-backed work; Linear and notification services are optional.

  • Provider choice spans hosted APIs, OAuth-backed Codex or GPT, local model servers and Claude Code CLI.
  • The review gate does not require the optional Linear-backed daemon or notification layer.
  • Repository configuration is written through openswarm init, with separate settings for provider, task backend and notifications.
  • Persistent repository knowledge is described as an optional orchestration capability that recalls task outcomes into later prompts.
  • The documented stack is TypeScript with CLI, server and self-hosted deployment modes.

Source-based practical guide

Set up OpenSwarm for a repository

Configure a provider, task backend and optional notification channel for a self-hosted OpenSwarm project.

Before you start

  • A repository containing the project to configure.
  • One supported provider connection: ChatGPT/Codex OAuth, OpenRouter, OpenAI OAuth, a local LM Studio or Ollama server, or an authenticated Claude CLI.
  • Optional Linear credentials if Linear is selected as the task backend.
  • Optional Discord, Slack, Telegram or webhook notification details.

Steps

  1. Install the package globally with the documented npm command.

  2. Run openswarm init and choose an AI provider.

  3. Choose the local SQLite task backend or configure Linear, then select an optional notification channel.

  4. Allow the wizard to write .env, config.yaml and, when applicable, openswarm.json.

  5. Use the documented authentication-status and diagnostic commands to inspect the configured connections.

Expected outcome

A repository-specific OpenSwarm configuration is written for subsequent chat, task or daemon use.

Guide limitations

  • The setup guide documents configuration and diagnostics, not a guaranteed successful run on a particular repository.
  • Linear, notifications and the daemon are optional layers; the review gate can be used without them.
