Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to run configurable AI server software that combines generation or chat with embedding and vector-database workflows.
Who it is for
- Developers building applications against an OpenAI-style API.
- Teams configuring multiple model providers behind server software they run themselves.
- Builders connecting embedding generation to a supported vector database.
Documented uses
- Serve text completions and chat through a common API shape.
- Generate images using configured image providers.
- Create embeddings and store them in configured vector databases.
- Use streaming or function calling where the selected provider and model support it.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as open source under the MIT license.
- Provider capabilities differ: the README lists feature support by provider, and function calling is only available for some models.
- API keys, provider URLs and model settings are configured in YAML files.
- GPU support requires separate installation of PyTorch and llama-cpp-python for the applicable GPU type.
- LangChain is used for language-model handling; provider SDKs cover image generation and related functions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and start the Openserver module
Install the listed Python requirements and launch the server module.
Before you start
- A local copy of the Openserver repository
- Python and pip
Steps
Clone the repository with the command below.
git clone https://github.com/mj23978/openserver.gitEnter the project directory with
cd openserver.Install dependencies with the command below.
pip install -r requirements.txtStart the server with the command below.
python -m openserver.main
Expected outcome
The documented command starts the Openserver module as a server.
Guide limitations
- GPU support requires manually installing PyTorch and llama-cpp-python for the relevant GPU type (CUDA or ROCm).
