Practical overview
When it fits
Use Openagents when several supported agents need a shared place to coordinate work and retain common conversation, file and browser context.
Who it is for
- People coordinating multiple supported AI coding agents across projects or machines.
- Teams that want agents and people to share conversation context, files and browser activity.
Documented uses
- Connect supported agents to one persistent workspace.
- Bring agents into shared conversation threads and direct work with @mentions.
- Exchange files and reports among agents and people.
- Let agents use a browser that other workspace participants can see.
- Expose a local development server through a public URL for remote previews.
Requirements & limits
The project describes itself as open source under Apache 2.0 and says no account is required. The README provides CLI installers for macOS/Linux and Windows, plus desktop launcher downloads for macOS, Windows and Linux.
- The README lists supported agents, with Cline marked beta and DeepSeek Harness marked preview.
- Agent creation and runtime installation are separate unless the creation command uses --install.
- Workspace collaboration is separate from local agent lifecycle management handled by the launcher.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and connect an agent with the CLI
Create an agent configuration, prepare its runtime and credentials, then connect it to a workspace and start the launcher daemon.
Before you start
- The Openagents CLI, installed using the documented macOS/Linux or Windows command.
- An agent type and its runtime; the README says to install the runtime separately or pass --install during creation.
- An LLM API key when required by the agent, and a workspace token.
Steps
Run the documented installer for macOS/Linux or Windows PowerShell.
Create an agent with
agn create --type --install, or install the runtime separately before creating its configuration.Set credentials with
agn env --set LLM_API_KEY=...and connect the agent usingagn connect.Run
agn upto start the daemon, thenagnto open the interactive dashboard.
Expected outcome
The agent is configured, connected to a workspace and managed through the launcher dashboard.
Guide limitations
- The creation command without --install writes only the agent configuration; it does not install the runtime.
- The README does not establish that every listed agent uses the same credential requirements.
