Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Omnisim when a robotic system needs an agent-accessible simulation environment for development, debugging, digital-twin work or repeatable evaluation before physical deployment.

Who it is for

  • People learning robotics without access to hardware
  • Robotics developers building or testing robotic systems
  • Coding-agent developers using HTTP/JSON or MCP control
  • Research teams working with simulation, benchmarks or reinforcement learning

Documented uses

  • Program and test simulated robots through agent-facing interfaces
  • Debug robot behaviour using simulation observations
  • Build digital twins from robot and CAD descriptions
  • Evaluate changes before connecting software to physical systems
  • Create reproducible robotics and learning benchmarks
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository describes Omnisim as free and open source under Apache-2.0. Windows has a downloadable package, Linux is a source build, and macOS is not supported.

  • Choose it for agent-facing HTTP/JSON or MCP control of simulated robots.
  • Consider the available platform path: prebuilt Windows package, Linux source build, or no macOS support.
  • Use the CPU solver when the documented bitwise repeatability across cold launches matters; the stated result does not apply to the GPU solver.
  • Treat simulation-to-hardware work as requiring separate driver wiring.
  • Account for the absence of pause, breakpoints, record/replay and diff controls during a run.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the documented agent-controlled robotics workflow

Prepare Omnisim for coding-agent programming, testing and debugging through its documented control interfaces.

Before you start

  • A supported operating system: Windows has the first downloadable package; Linux requires a source build; macOS is not supported.
  • A running Omnisim simulation.
  • An agent using the documented HTTP/JSON or MCP control path.

Steps

  1. Install or build Omnisim according to the platform-specific path documented in the repository.

  2. Start a simulation containing the robotic system to be examined.

  3. Connect the coding agent through the HTTP/JSON interface or the first-party MCP server.

  4. Use the agent tools to program, test and debug the simulated system, consulting the exposed simulation observations when behaviour needs investigation.

Expected outcome

A coding agent can work against a running simulated robotic system through the documented agent-facing interfaces.

Guide limitations

  • The supplied documentation does not provide implementation-level commands or a complete tool-by-tool example.
  • The driver must be wired separately for physical-robot connections.
  • No policy trained in simulation has been validated on hardware.
