Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have an Ollama endpoint and want to generate and compare responses across model, prompt or inference-parameter combinations before settling on a configuration.
Who it is for
- People choosing among Ollama-served models for a particular use case.
- Prompt authors comparing variants across models or configurations.
- Developers who want to record, inspect and rerun inference experiments.
Documented uses
- Compare prompt variants on one or more models.
- Test model choices using the same prompt and parameter configuration.
- Explore inference parameter values across selected models and prompts.
- Inspect experiment results and optionally review timing and token metadata.
- Save prompts and revisit, modify, or download previous experiments.
Requirements & limits
The repository README lists desktop releases for macOS, Windows and Linux. Apple Silicon macOS first launch requires using the “Open” option because the app is not notarized.
- Requires Ollama installed and serving an endpoint, either locally or remotely.
- The tool generates comparison results; grading and filtering by grade are listed as future features.
- Experiments can be downloaded in JSON, and past runs can be cloned or modified for reruns.
- Inference calls can use limited concurrency or run synchronously; an inference timeout is configurable.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Ollama Grid Search on Apple Silicon
Install the macOS application and prepare its documented Ollama endpoint prerequisite.
Before you start
- An Apple Silicon Mac
- The application's aarch64 DMG from the project releases
- Ollama installed and serving an endpoint locally or remotely
Steps
Download the aarch64 DMG from the releases page.
Open the DMG and drag the application to Applications.
Right-click or Control-click the app and select “Open”.
Select “Open” in the security dialog; subsequent launches can use a double-click.
Expected outcome
The application is installed and can launch, with an Ollama endpoint available as its model server.
Guide limitations
- The first-launch instructions apply to Apple Silicon macOS and the README states that the app is not notarized.
- This covers installation and endpoint prerequisites, not running an experiment.
