Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need to prepare address data from the SDN XML file for a separate process, or want to inspect the repository’s generated per-asset lists. Check asset coverage and validate the output for the intended use.
Who it is for
- Developers assembling address data for a separate sanctions-screening workflow.
- Teams that need address lists in plain-text or JSON form for supported digital assets.
Documented uses
- Extract supported digital-currency addresses from an SDN XML file.
- Create a TXT list with one address per line or a JSON list for downstream processing.
- Use a repository-provided, automatically generated per-asset list as an input to another workflow.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and the software is provided under the MIT License.
- The tool extracts and exports addresses; screening is a separate downstream task.
- The README names supported assets but warns that some SDN-listed assets may not be covered.
- The repository’s lists branch is described as generating per-asset lists nightly at 0 UTC through GitHub Actions.
- The author provides no warranty, particularly for completeness or correctness.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Extract addresses from the SDN XML file
Generate a TXT or JSON address list for a supported asset from an SDN XML file.
Before you start
- Python 3, as indicated by the documented python3 command.
- An SDN XML file named sdn_advanced.xml in the current directory, or its path for the -sdn option.
- The repository script generate-address-list.py.
Steps
Obtain the sdn_advanced.xml file from the U.S. Treasury download linked in the repository README.
Run python3 generate-address-list.py for the default Bitcoin TXT list, or supply asset tickers such as ETH or LTC.
For JSON output, add the documented -f JSON option, for example: python3 generate-address-list.py XMR -f JSON.
Consult python3 generate-address-list.py --help for detailed usage instructions.
Expected outcome
The script writes an address list file, using TXT by default or JSON when requested.
Guide limitations
- The README says some assets on the SDN list may not yet be covered; check the supported list for current coverage.
- The author provides no warranty, especially concerning completeness and correctness of generated lists.
- The README's example describes the XML file as approximately 80 MB in May 2023; that size is historical and may change.
