Practical overview
When it fits
Use Octocode during code investigation, before asking an agent to change, review or explain an implementation, especially when relevant context may be in a local project or an external repository.
Who it is for
- Developers who need to locate and understand code in a local project.
- AI coding-agent builders who want code-search and repository-research tools over MCP or a CLI workflow.
Documented uses
- Find relevant symbols, text or files in a local codebase.
- Research code in GitHub repositories and npm before adapting or explaining an implementation.
- Give a coding agent compact code context to consult before proposing or reviewing changes.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as MIT-licensed. The CLI quick start requires Node.js 20.12 or later. GitHub-backed tools require authentication; the README describes Octocode login and GitHub CLI authentication. A GitHub login can enable private-repository access and higher API rate limits.
- Choose CLI for terminal-based research or MCP when you want to expose the same tools to an MCP client.
- Local filesystem tools are enabled by default in the CLI; for MCP, local access must be enabled explicitly.
- Clone support is enabled by default in the CLI and disabled by default for MCP.
- GitHub authentication is needed for GitHub-backed tools, while local search is a separate capability.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run a local code search with the CLI
Search a local project for a code term and inspect matching file context.
Before you start
- Node.js 20.12 or later
- Octocode CLI invoked through npx
Steps
Run the command below to view CLI usage.
npx octocode --helpFrom the project directory, run the command below to inspect the tool's schema.
npx octocode tools localSearchCode --schemeRun the tool with a local path and search term, for example: the command below.
npx octocode tools localSearchCode --queries '{"path":".","searchText":"authenticate","maxFiles":20}'Review the YAML results, which include matching file paths and lines.
Expected outcome
A set of local code-search matches with file paths and matching lines.
Guide limitations
- This recipe covers local search only; GitHub-backed tools require authentication.
- The example searches for the literal term
authenticate; the returned matches depend on the project.
