Ocean.py

Ocean.py is an open-source Python library for publishing, exchanging and consuming data services through Ocean Protocol. It creates ERC-721 data NFTs and ERC-20 datatokens for services such as data feeds, REST APIs, downloadable files and Compute-to-Data, and supports fixed-price sales, token transfers and other token operations through web3.py.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when developing Python-based workflows for publishing, exchanging or consuming Ocean Protocol data assets, and when its documented token and Compute-to-Data flows match the task.

Who it is for

  • Python developers building workflows around Ocean Protocol data assets.
  • Data scientists publishing or consuming data services, including Compute-to-Data workflows.

Documented uses

  • Publish a data feed, REST API, downloadable file or Compute-to-Data service as an Ocean asset.
  • Create data NFTs and access datatokens for a service.
  • Offer datatokens at a fixed price or sell data NFTs.
  • Transfer data NFTs and datatokens, or perform other ERC-721 and ERC-20 actions through web3.py.
  • Follow documented workflows to obtain and consume free or priced assets.

Requirements & limits

The repository documents remote setup for Windows, macOS and Linux, and local setup for Linux. The library is public and Apache-2.0 licensed.

  • The README states that the project is beta and has not been maintained since early 2025, with no expectation that reported bugs will be fixed.
  • The documented asset model pairs each service with an ERC-721 data NFT and an ERC-20 datatoken for access.
  • Remote and local setup have different documented platform coverage: remote supports Windows, macOS and Linux; local setup is Linux-only.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Follow the documented Ocean.py main flow

Set up the library and proceed to the documented workflow for publishing and consuming an Ocean data asset.

Before you start

  • Ocean.py installed using the repository's installation instructions.
  • Remote setup on Windows, macOS or Linux, or local setup on Linux.

Steps

  1. Install Ocean.py using the repository's installation guide.

  2. Complete either the remote setup guide or the Linux-only local setup guide.

  3. Follow the main-flow walkthrough to publish an asset, offer it for free or for sale, dispense or buy it, and consume it.

Expected outcome

A guided workflow covering publication, access and consumption of an Ocean asset.

Guide limitations

  • The repository says the project is in beta and has not been maintained since early 2025; bugs may not be fixed.
  • The README links to the workflow but does not include its detailed execution steps in the supplied text.
