Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when portrait background processing or low-light enhancement is needed inside an OBS Studio recording or streaming scene.
Who it is for
- OBS Studio users who want to replace or remove the background behind a portrait video feed.
- Creators and remote presenters who want to combine portrait segmentation with other OBS effects.
- Developers interested in building or adapting a C++ OBS plugin that uses ONNX Runtime.
Documented uses
- Remove a portrait video's background in an OBS scene.
- Compose the portrait cutout with an image or transparent color using other OBS plugins.
- Apply the documented low-light enhancement in an OBS workflow.
Requirements & limits
The project identifies itself as open source under GPL-3.0 and provides download and installation information on its project site and GitHub releases page.
- OBS Studio is the host application; this is a plugin, not a standalone editor.
- The documented official source-build platforms are Debian Forky on x86_64 and arm64.
- Mac acceleration uses CoreML; Linux GPU options require a source build and an ONNX Runtime installation with the relevant support.
- The README says CPU thread count is configurable and suggests trying two threads.
- Mac binaries do not support cross-architecture translation through Rosetta 2.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build the plugin on Debian Forky
Build the OBS Backgroundremoval plugin from source on the documented Debian Forky targets.
Before you start
- Debian Forky on x86_64 or arm64, the platforms listed for official source builds.
- A system prepared to run the repository's bootstrap, setup, build and package-install commands.
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Run
sudo ./bin/bootstrap.Run
./bin/setup, then./bin/build.Install the generated package with
sudo dpkg -i release/obs-backgroundremoval-*-linux-gnu.deb.
Expected outcome
The documented build process produces a Linux package for installation with dpkg.
Guide limitations
- The README lists Debian Forky on x86_64 and arm64 as supported for source builds.
- These are repository instructions, not a report of an independently verified build.
