Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want MCP clients to access Nautobot APIs or search a knowledge base of Nautobot-related repositories, and can provide the required Nautobot and repository credentials.
Who it is for
- Teams using MCP clients that need access to Nautobot APIs.
- Developers who want semantic discovery of Nautobot API endpoints.
- Nautobot operators who need to search indexed repository documentation and code.
Documented uses
- Find relevant Nautobot API endpoints from a natural-language query.
- Make HTTP requests, including CRUD operations, against Nautobot API endpoints.
- Search indexed Nautobot documentation and code semantically.
- Connect an MCP client using STDIO or provide an HTTP deployment for web-based integrations.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. The project documents Docker Compose and local Python installation options.
- The documented Python requirement is 3.11 or newer but below 3.12.
- A Nautobot instance and API token are needed for API access.
- A GitHub token is listed for accessing repositories used by the knowledge base.
- The server supports multiple Nautobot environments and provides separate configuration for environment-specific URLs and tokens.
- The default embedding model is all-MiniLM-L6-v2, and the README describes ChromaDB-powered vector storage.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and configure with Docker Compose
Prepare the Nautobot MCP Server environment and choose STDIO or HTTP transport.
Before you start
- Docker and Docker Compose
- Python 3.11 or newer but below 3.12 is listed as a project prerequisite
- Access to a Nautobot instance and its API token
- GitHub token for repository access
Steps
Clone the repository and change into the nautobot_mcp directory.
Copy .env.example to .env and configure the Nautobot and GitHub settings.
Run docker compose up -d for the default STDIO mode, or set MCP_TRANSPORT=http and MCP_PORT=8000 before running Docker Compose for HTTP mode.
Expected outcome
The server is configured to start in STDIO mode or HTTP mode, according to the selected Docker Compose command.
Guide limitations
- These steps describe setup and startup commands; they do not document connecting a particular client or verifying successful API operations.
