Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Mythril during smart-contract development, as a pre-deployment security check, or when investigating differences in findings between contract versions.

Who it is for

  • Smart-contract developers working with Solidity and Ethereum or other EVM-compatible blockchains.
  • Security engineers and development teams adding program analysis to contract workflows.

Documented uses

  • Analyze a Solidity file for potential smart-contract vulnerabilities.
  • Analyze a contract at an address.
  • Explore transaction sequences associated with reported issues.
  • Add security analysis to a pre-commit workflow.
  • Review vulnerability classifications and remediation guidance.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and uses the MIT license. Documented installation routes include Docker and PyPI; the PyPI instructions specify Python 3.7–3.10.

  • It analyzes EVM bytecode rather than serving as a general-purpose source-code editor.
  • The documented interface is command-line based.
  • Analysis can target either a Solidity file or a contract address.
  • Transaction exploration can be bounded with -t, and execution can be limited with a timeout.
  • The output includes contextual details such as severity, SWC ID, source location, and transaction sequence.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Mythril and run a documented Solidity analysis

Set up Mythril and analyze a Solidity file with a transaction-exploration limit.

Before you start

  • Docker, or Python 3.7–3.10 for the PyPI installation route.
  • A Solidity file to analyze.

Steps

  1. Install with Docker using the documented mythril/myth image, or install the package with pip3 install mythril.

  2. Run myth analyze .

  3. Optionally set the maximum number of transactions with -t .

  4. Review the reported vulnerability details, source location, severity, and transaction sequence.

Expected outcome

A Mythril analysis report for the selected Solidity file, including findings and the explored transaction sequence when applicable.

Guide limitations

  • The documented commands do not establish that every contract will produce a finding.
  • Analysis depth is affected by the configured transaction limit; an execution timeout can also be set with --execution-timeout .
