Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an MCP-compatible AI client needs structured access to a MySQL database for exploration, schema review, sampling or SQL work.
Who it is for
- Developers connecting MCP-compatible AI clients to MySQL.
- Teams building database-query assistants or AI workflows for MySQL-backed applications.
Documented uses
- Inspect table structures, including column names, types, nullability, defaults and comments.
- Sample up to 20 rows from a table to understand its data.
- Run SQL queries, including SELECT, SHOW, DESCRIBE and data-modification statements.
- Expose user databases to an AI client when no single database is configured.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents a public MIT-licensed Python project with manual pip installation and setup paths for Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Autohand Code. It also describes Smithery installation for Claude Desktop.
- The client must support MCP and be configured to launch or connect to the server.
- Database host, user and password are required;
MYSQL_DATABASEis optional. - Multi-database mode lists user databases, filters system databases and requires fully qualified table names for queries.
- Only single SQL statements are supported; DML operations are marked as destructive.
- The server supports STDIO and Streamable HTTP (SSE); its README recommends SSE for remote or self-hosted deployments.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure MySQL MCP Server for Claude Code
Register the server with Claude Code over STDIO and provide the MySQL connection settings.
Before you start
- Claude Code CLI
- A reachable MySQL database and its host, user and password
- Python package execution through uvx, as shown in the repository instructions
Steps
Register the server with
claude mcp add --transport stdio designcomputer-mysql_mcp_server uvx mysql_mcp_server.Provide the required
MYSQL_HOST,MYSQL_USERandMYSQL_PASSWORDvalues in the MCP configuration's environment block.Set
MYSQL_DATABASEif you want to select one database; omit it to use multi-database mode.
Expected outcome
Claude Code has an MCP server configuration for accessing the selected MySQL database or, in multi-database mode, user databases.
Guide limitations
- The README warns that Claude Code does not load the project directory's
.envfile; database variables belong in the MCP configuration. - SQL execution supports one statement at a time.
