Moonbite

Moonbite is an experimental Python framework that runs alongside a host AI agent to provide persistent cross-session memory, short-lived working state, heartbeat-driven decisions, bounded autonomy and verified records of external actions.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Moonbite when an existing host agent needs continuity, current-state tracking and controlled action records without transferring models, tools, credentials, scheduling or delivery into the framework.

Who it is for

  • Builders of long-running AI agents that need continuity across sessions
  • Teams using Hermes Agent as the host for an experimental agent runtime
  • Developers who want host-side action receipts and append-only runtime records

Documented uses

  • Remember relevant information across agent sessions
  • Maintain bounded working state for current activity
  • Decide whether an agent should act, remain quiet or escalate
  • Limit autonomous activity to eligible host-triggered actions
  • Record and verify whether external actions occurred

Requirements & limits

The public preview is source-only and is installed through Hermes from a GitHub release tag or an immutable commit SHA. It supports Linux, WSL2 on a native Linux filesystem and macOS in the documented preview.

  • Hermes Agent is the only supported host in the preview.
  • The host must continue to provide models, tools, credentials, scheduling, network access, gateway execution and delivery.
  • Heartbeat, Autonomy, Panel and Memory are disabled by default.
  • External actions require a matching host execution receipt before they are accepted or completed.
  • The project is experimental and does not provide a stable public Python API or production support guarantee.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Moonbite in a disabled Hermes preview setup

Install Moonbite from a reviewed immutable commit, inspect the installation and enable it only after configuration review.

Before you start

  • Hermes Agent
  • A full 40-character Moonbite commit SHA
  • Linux, WSL2 on a native Linux filesystem, or macOS

Steps

  1. Install beniedev/moonbite through Hermes with the reviewed 40-character commit SHA and the no-enable option.

  2. Inspect installer security findings.

  3. Run the Moonbite manifest doctor in CI mode.

  4. Merge an owner-reviewed configuration and enable the plugin without allowing tool override.

Expected outcome

Moonbite is installed from a pinned source revision and enabled only after the documented inspection and review steps.

Guide limitations

  • The preview is source-only and is not published to a package registry.
  • The documented preview supports Hermes as the host; support for other agent hosts or frameworks is not provided.
  • Installation alone does not start background tasks, model calls, network requests or external messages.
