Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an MCP-compatible AI client needs a MongoDB connection: choose the local mongodb plugin for a self-managed deployment, or the hosted mongodb-atlas plugin for Atlas without running a local server.

Who it is for

  • Developers connecting MCP-compatible AI clients to a self-managed MongoDB deployment.
  • Atlas users setting up an AI-agent connection through the hosted Atlas MCP server or local configuration.

Documented uses

  • Connect an MCP-compatible assistant to a MongoDB database using a connection string.
  • Connect an AI agent to MongoDB Atlas through the hosted Atlas MCP server over OAuth.
  • Configure a local server using a connection string or Atlas API credentials.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The local server requires Node.js 22.13.0 or later and database connection details or Atlas API credentials. The hosted Atlas plugin connects over OAuth and does not require running a local server.

  • The self-managed mongodb plugin runs locally; the mongodb-atlas plugin connects to a MongoDB-hosted server over OAuth.
  • The setup script accepts either a MongoDB connection string or Atlas API credentials.
  • Atlas tools require service-account Atlas API credentials.
  • The project is TypeScript and licensed under Apache-2.0.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure the local MongoDB MCP server

Start the interactive local setup and provide the required MongoDB connection details.

Before you start

  • Node.js 22.13.0 or later
  • A MongoDB connection string or Atlas API credentials

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    npx -y mongodb-mcp-server@latest setup
  2. Follow the interactive prompts to configure a MongoDB connection string or Atlas API credentials.

Expected outcome

The setup script guides configuration of the local MCP server.

Guide limitations

  • The documented steps cover configuration; they do not describe a specific subsequent database operation.
  • Atlas tools require service-account Atlas API credentials.
