Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ming when you need a self-hosted model for research or prototyping of Chinese medical Q&A, case analysis or multi-turn consultation, rather than a hosted patient-facing service.
Who it is for
- Researchers evaluating Chinese medical language models.
- Developers prototyping medical question-answering, case-analysis or consultation interfaces.
- Teams exploring multi-turn patient-intake workflows in research settings.
Documented uses
- Answer Chinese-language medical questions with a model checkpoint.
- Analyze a medical case in a conversational workflow.
- Prototype a multi-turn consultation that returns diagnostic results and suggestions.
- Compare or evaluate model variants for medical consultation research.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the code license as Apache-2.0. The documented workflow requires downloading model checkpoint files and running them locally; the README specifies at least 15 GB of single-GPU memory for its described run.
- The project provides several checkpoint variants, including MING-7B, MING-1.8B and MING-MOE models in multiple sizes.
- The documented stack includes Python, PyTorch, PEFT and a command-line interface; the README's example environment is Python 3.9.16, PyTorch 2.0.1+cu117 and PEFT 0.9.0.
- The repository warns that outputs may be inaccurate, biased or incomplete and says they must not be used for real-world application or decision-making.
- The documented single-GPU memory requirement is at least 15 GB for the described run.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Ming for command-line consultation
Install the repository dependencies, then prepare to run a checkpoint using the documented command-line interface.
Before you start
- Linux or another self-hosted environment suitable for the repository workflow
- Python 3.9 or later; the README lists Python 3.9.16, PyTorch 2.0.1+cu117 and PEFT 0.9.0 as its tested environment
- A downloaded model checkpoint; MING-MOE also requires its base-model path
- At least 15 GB of single-GPU memory for the described run
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Install the project dependencies with the command below.
pip install -e .Download the desired model checkpoint and, for MING-MOE, its base model.
Use the README's model-specific the command below command with the checkpoint path and applicable options to start the command-line conversation.
python -m ming/serve/cli.py
Expected outcome
A local command-line conversation with the selected Ming checkpoint; the README states that conversations support multiple turns and that entering `new chat` starts a new conversation.
Guide limitations
- The README's minimum single-GPU memory requirement for the described run is 15 GB.
- The project warns that model outputs can be erroneous, biased or incomplete and are for reference and research, not real-world application or decision-making.
