Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have a Merkle tree JSON file and a leaf hash to check locally from a terminal.
Who it is for
- Developers and operators who need to check a leaf against a Merkle tree.
- Teams validating inclusion data used in proof-of-reserves or proof-of-liabilities workflows.
Documented uses
- Check the integrity of a Merkle tree from a JSON file.
- Verify whether a particular leaf hash is included in that tree.
- Print the tree root and leaf as JSON for inspection using verbose mode.
Requirements & limits
The project is a public GitHub repository under the MIT license. Its documented workflow requires Node.js and npm.
- The tool operates on a local tree JSON file and a supplied leaf hash.
- It is a CLI rather than a hosted verification interface.
- Verbose mode prints the root and leaf as JSON objects.
- The README documents both npm-script and direct Node.js invocation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and build the command-line verifier
Prepare the project locally by installing its dependencies and building the TypeScript files.
Before you start
- Node.js
- npm
Steps
Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/cakedefi/merkle-proof-tool.git
Change into the project directory: cd merkle-proof-tool
Install dependencies with npm install.
Build the project with npm run build.
Expected outcome
The TypeScript files are transpiled into JavaScript in the ./build folder.
Check a leaf against a Merkle tree file
Use the verifier to check tree integrity and whether a supplied hash is included.
Before you start
- Node.js and npm
- A Merkle tree JSON file
- The hash ID of the leaf to verify
- The project dependencies installed and build completed
Steps
Run npm run verify -- --tree= --hash= --verbose.
Review the verifier's result; with --verbose, the tree root and leaf are printed as JSON objects.
Expected outcome
The utility checks the tree and the specified leaf; verbose mode includes the root and leaf JSON in console output.
Guide limitations
- The tree file path and leaf hash are mandatory parameters.
- The README documents npm invocation; when using the Node.js runtime directly, it gives node build/verify.js --tree= --hash= --verbose and notes that the extra -- separator is not used.
