Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an MCP project needs server development alongside typed tools, interactive views, and browser or headless integration inspection.

Who it is for

  • TypeScript developers building MCP servers
  • Teams creating MCP Apps with native or React views
  • Developers integrating tools with ChatGPT or Claude
  • AI agent developers who need an Inspector for MCP integrations

Documented uses

  • Build an MCP server that exposes tools to AI agents
  • Create an MCP App with a native view
  • Develop a ChatGPT plugin connected to MCP tools
  • Develop a Claude connector backed by an MCP server
  • Inspect MCP tools and views during development

Requirements & limits

The repository is public, open source, and MIT licensed. The documented starter workflow uses npx and npm commands.

  • TypeScript is the documented implementation language.
  • Native Views and MCP Apps support are included in the framework description.
  • The Inspector can be used in a browser or headlessly through the CLI.
  • The starter project includes server scaffolding, development scripts, and a React view pipeline.
  • The framework targets MCP integrations across OpenAI and Anthropic ecosystems.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Scaffold an MCP project and open its Inspector

Create the documented starter project and access its local Inspector.

Before you start

  • Node.js tooling capable of running the documented npx command
  • A generated mcp-use project

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    npx -y create-mcp-use-app@latest
  2. In the generated project, run the command below.

    Documented command
    npm run dev
  3. Open http://localhost:3000/mcp/inspector in a browser.

Expected outcome

A development project is started with the documented Inspector available at the local MCP route.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe covers scaffolding and starting the development project; it does not document deployment or a complete tool implementation.
