Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want desktop access to several local AI workflows through one application, rather than a cloud-only chat interface or separate tools for each task.
Who it is for
- People who want a single desktop workspace for local chat, visual generation and coding assistance.
- Windows and Linux users seeking an interface to work with AI models on their own machine.
Documented uses
- Chat with a locally run model.
- Create images and video in a desktop workspace.
- Use a coding agent and review its proposed diff.
- Switch among chat, visual-generation and coding workflows in one application.
Requirements & limits
The project describes desktop support for Windows and Linux and offers release builds through its GitHub repository. The README says there is no macOS desktop build; LU Cloud is a separate browser-based offering.
- Local desktop operation is the defining workflow; the README says everything runs on the user's machine.
- The supported desktop platforms identified in the README are Windows and Linux.
- The repository lists the AGPL-3.0 license and TypeScript as its primary language.
- The README distinguishes the local desktop app from LU Cloud, a browser-based service.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Locally Uncensored on Windows or Linux
Download and install the desktop application on a supported operating system.
Before you start
- A Windows 10 or 11 computer, or a Linux computer.
- An internet connection to download the installer.
Steps
Open the project's latest Releases page: https://github.com/PurpleDoubleD/locally-uncensored/releases/latest.
Download the installer or package listed for your operating system.
Run the downloaded installer or install the Linux package.
Expected outcome
The Locally Uncensored desktop application is installed and ready for first launch.
Guide limitations
- The current release has no macOS desktop build.
- The Windows installer is not yet signed with a Microsoft code-signing certificate; SmartScreen or antivirus warnings may appear. Verify the download source and version, and do not bypass or disable security protections.
Set up local chat with the first-start wizard
Use the setup wizard to prepare a local AI engine, download a starter model, and send a first chat message.
Before you start
- Locally Uncensored installed on Windows or Linux.
- A local AI model downloaded before chatting; the handbook describes the wizard as setting up the engine and downloading a starter model.
- A graphics card with at least 6 GB of memory is described as suitable for the handbook's working-local-AI path on most machines.
Steps
Launch the app and follow the first-start setup wizard to set up the LU Engine.
Use the wizard to download the starter model.
Open Chat and send a message.
Expected outcome
A first chat runs with a local model on the user's machine.
Guide limitations
- Performance and suitable models depend on the computer's hardware; the 6 GB graphics-memory guidance is not a guarantee for every machine.
- Model downloads and update checks use the network. Chat with a local model runs on the machine.
