Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when source documents should become editable Markdown notes and questions should be answered with citations back to those notes.
Who it is for
- Individuals organizing a personal archive of documents.
- Teams creating a searchable wiki from internal documents.
- Researchers filing source material into Markdown notes.
- Developers who want a document knowledge base with a web interface or HTTP API.
Documented uses
- Ingest `.txt`, `.md` and text-based `.pdf` files into a foldered knowledge wiki.
- Ask questions and inspect the cited notes behind answers.
- Browse folders, notes and links through a visual map.
- Read or edit the resulting Markdown files outside the application and keep them in Git.
- Use the documented API to ingest text or files, ask questions, and retrieve notes or the wiki graph.
Requirements & limits
The README documents a local installation and a browser interface. It lists Ollama, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Gemini and OpenAI-compatible servers as provider options; Ollama is described as local and requiring no account. The repository identifies the project as AGPL-3.0 licensed.
- CROW mode uses a classifier to route information; classic mode is available when no separate classifier provider is configured.
- Supported uploads include
.txt,.mdand.pdf; scanned PDFs require OCR to add a text layer first. - The knowledge base is stored as Markdown files, with Docker documentation placing the wiki under
./wiki. - Docker settings are supplied through
.env; the README says they can be viewed but not changed in the page.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
