Practical overview
When it fits
Use the documentation and code when you want to connect Llama and transformer concepts to a concrete Go implementation, or to explore CPU-based inference on the specifically supported model.
Who it is for
- Learners seeking a code-level view of how large language models and transformers work.
- Go developers studying model loading, tokenization, tensor operations and inference.
- Readers who want to trace how Llama 3.1 8B-Instruct produces text.
Documented uses
- Study a practical implementation of Llama 3.1 components outside the Python ecosystem.
- Inspect how official model weights, parameters and tokenizer files are loaded.
- Explore tensor and mathematical operations, BFloat16 handling, memory mapping and concurrent computation.
- Generate text from predefined or custom prompts and see tokens streamed to the console.
Requirements & limits
- The application targets Llama 3.1 8B-Instruct and its documented requirements, rather than serving as a general model framework.
- It uses official-format model files; obtaining them involves Meta's model-access process.
- Mathematical operations use CPU cores, with goroutine parallelization; GPGPU and SIMD are not supported.
- The project describes itself as educational and experimental, not tested for production or commercial use.
- The public repository identifies an Apache-2.0 license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare official Llama 3.1 model files
Obtain and prepare the official-format model files that the project uses.
Before you start
- Request access to Llama 3.1 model downloads from Meta and use the download instructions sent by email.
- Install wget and md5sum.
- Download the official Llama repository's download.sh script.
Steps
Create a parent directory for the model files and place download.sh inside it.
Make the script executable with chmod +x download.sh.
Run ./download.sh, enter the unique URL supplied by email, and choose the required model from the displayed list.
Expected outcome
The official-format model files are downloaded into the prepared directory for use with the project.
Guide limitations
- This covers model-file preparation only, not building or running the Go application.
- The project uses the official model format; other formats are not supported.
- Access to the model files requires following Meta's request process.
