Practical overview
When it fits
Use LightningTip when you operate a website and an LND node and want to embed a self-hosted interface for receiving Lightning tips.
Who it is for
- Website operators who want to accept Lightning tips through an embedded interface.
- Operators with an LND node who can host and keep a separate application executable running.
Documented uses
- Add a Lightning tipping interface to a website.
- Connect that interface to an LND-backed payment setup.
- Keep the widget available by running LightningTip alongside an online, funded LND node.
Requirements & limits
The project is open source under the MIT license. It can be obtained as a prebuilt release or built from source.
- LND must be installed and fully synced before LightningTip setup.
- Incoming channels must have sufficient funding, and the node must remain online.
- The widget should not be used on XHTML sites.
- Reverse proxies need EventSource support for the tip confirmation screen.
- Building from source requires Go 1.11 or newer.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and embed the LightningTip widget
Connect LightningTip to LND and place its widget on a website.
Before you start
- LND installed and fully synced
- A website and web server where the widget files can be placed
- A running LightningTip executable
- For a source build, Go version 1.11 or newer
Steps
Download a prebuilt version or compile LightningTip from source.
Configure the application using its default configuration file or a custom file.
Upload all files except lightningTip.html to the web server, then copy the head contents and widget div from lightningTip.html into the target page.
Adjust requestUrl if LightningTip uses a different domain or IP address, or a port other than 8081, and keep the executable running.
Expected outcome
A website page contains the LightningTip interface connected to the operator’s LND node.
Guide limitations
- Do not use the widget on XHTML sites.
- Keep LND online and incoming channels sufficiently funded to receive tips.
- A reverse proxy needs EventSource support for visitors to see the tip confirmation screen.
