Practical overview
When it fits
Use Leafminer for educational experimentation with Bitcoin mining on ESP hardware, rather than as a realistic way to mine a block.
Who it is for
- People learning how Bitcoin mining and SHA-256 work through ESP hardware.
- Makers setting up a small ESP-based mining device or display.
Documented uses
- Run Bitcoin mining computations on a supported ESP board.
- Explore SHA-256 mining behavior with a physical device.
- Flash and configure a board for solo mining.
Requirements & limits
The project is published as open-source software under the MIT license. The documented setup uses a supported board and a board-specific firmware binary; VSCode and PlatformIO are optional for the flash-binary route.
- Board support varies: ESP8266 is marked partially functional, while the other listed boards are marked fully functional.
- The README gives expected hashrates of approximately 16–80 kH/s, depending on the board.
- Solo mining is supported; cascade mining is listed as unimplemented.
- The project explicitly says successful block mining is highly unlikely.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Flash and configure an ESP miner
Set up a supported ESP board with Leafminer using the documented binary-flashing and Wi-Fi configuration flow.
Before you start
- A supported ESP8266 or ESP32-family board
- A board-specific Leafminer binary from the project releases
- A Chrome-based browser for ESPWebTool
Steps
Download the binary for the board from the Leafminer releases.
Open ESPWebTool in a Chrome-based browser and upload the binary according to the address in its filename.
Power up the board and connect to the LEAFMINER Wi-Fi network.
Open the configuration page at http://192.168.4.1 if the captive portal does not appear, fill out the form, save, and reboot.
Expected outcome
The README says a successful setup shows the miner in the stats.
Guide limitations
- The README says successful block mining is highly unlikely because of current mining complexity.
- ESP8266 is marked partially functional; the other listed supported boards are marked fully functional.
Build Leafminer from source
Upload the Leafminer project to a supported board using the documented PlatformIO workflow.
Before you start
- A supported board
- PlatformIO
Steps
Clone the Leafminer project.
Open the project in PlatformIO.
Upload the project to the board.
Expected outcome
The documented workflow ends with the project uploaded to the board.
Guide limitations
- The README does not provide further build parameters or troubleshooting instructions in this workflow.
