Kubernetes MCP Server

Kubernetes MCP Server is a Go-based Model Context Protocol server that connects compatible AI clients to Kubernetes and OpenShift environments and exposes cluster-management operations. It communicates directly with the Kubernetes API server rather than wrapping kubectl or Helm commands.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an MCP-compatible AI client needs access to a Kubernetes or OpenShift cluster for documented inspection or management tasks.

Who it is for

  • Developers and platform operators who want to use an MCP-compatible AI client for Kubernetes or OpenShift tasks.
  • Teams incorporating cluster inspection or management into AI-assisted workflows.

Documented uses

  • Inspect Kubernetes configuration, namespaces, events and pods.
  • Retrieve pod logs and resource-usage metrics, run a command in a pod, or launch a container image.
  • Create, update, get, list or delete Kubernetes and OpenShift resources.
  • Install, list or uninstall Helm releases and operate on Tekton pipelines and tasks.

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under the Apache-2.0 license. Access to a Kubernetes cluster is required. The README describes native binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as npm, Python and container packages.

  • Requires access to a Kubernetes cluster and an MCP-compatible client.
  • Supports both Kubernetes and OpenShift, with multi-cluster interaction based on kubeconfig files.
  • Operations include changes as well as inspection; the README points to a dedicated ServiceAccount and read-only setup guide for production configurations.
  • The Go server communicates directly with the Kubernetes API server rather than invoking kubectl or Helm as external commands.
  • Setup and configuration options include CLI arguments, TOML files and environment variables.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add the server to Claude Desktop with npx

Configure Claude Desktop to start Kubernetes MCP Server through npx.

Before you start

  • Access to a Kubernetes cluster.
  • npm installed.

Steps

  1. Open the Claude Desktop configuration file named claude_desktop_config.json.

  2. Add a kubernetes entry under mcpServers, with command set to npx and arguments set to -y and kubernetes-mcp-server@latest.

  3. Save the configuration.

Expected outcome

Claude Desktop is configured with the Kubernetes MCP Server entry.

Guide limitations

  • This documented setup covers client configuration; it does not describe cluster permission setup or verify that the client can perform operations.
