Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI client supports OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible APIs and you want to route its requests through a server authenticated to Kiro.
Who it is for
- Developers who want compatible AI tools or libraries to send requests through a Kiro-backed API endpoint.
- People able to provide Kiro credentials and operate a Python server.
Documented uses
- Route client requests to model services available through Kiro.
- Connect OpenAI-compatible tools through an OpenAI-compatible API or use the Anthropic-compatible messages interface.
- Use gateway features such as streaming, image input, tool calling, web search, and conversation-history forwarding.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies its license as AGPL-3.0. The gateway requires Kiro IDE credentials or Kiro CLI/AWS SSO credentials; model availability depends on the user's Kiro tier.
- Requires Python 3.10+ and local server setup; the README also describes Docker as a deployment option.
- Supports both OpenAI-compatible API requests and an Anthropic-compatible
/v1/messagesinterface. - The gateway's model list is not a guarantee of access: available models depend on the Kiro account tier and the user's IDE or CLI.
- The README describes multi-account failover and HTTP/SOCKS5 proxy support alongside features such as streaming and tool calling. The excerpt does not provide their configuration steps.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and configure Kiro Gateway
Prepare a local Kiro Gateway server with credentials and a proxy API key.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- Git, or a downloaded and extracted repository archive
- A logged-in Kiro IDE account, or Kiro CLI/AWS SSO credentials
- A proxy API key of your choosing
Steps
Clone the repository and enter its directory, or download and extract the ZIP archive.
Install dependencies with the command below.
pip install -r requirements.txtCopy
.env.exampleto.envand configure credentials using a credentials-file path, a refresh token, or the documented AWS SSO option; setPROXY_API_KEY.Start the server with the command below; the README also documents the command below for a custom port.
python main.pypython main.py --port 9000
Expected outcome
The README says the server is available locally at `http://localhost:8000` with the default port.
Guide limitations
- This covers setup and server startup, not a request from a client application.
- Model availability depends on the Kiro account tier and the models available in the user's IDE or CLI.
