Practical overview
When it fits
Use Kiln when you want an MCP-capable AI client to help create, slice, submit or monitor a 3D-print job and your printer has a documented connection route.
Who it is for
- Makers who want to create and submit 3D-print jobs through a compatible AI client.
- Developers configuring MCP tools for printer workflows.
- Users managing supported printers through documented network or USB connection routes.
Documented uses
- Turn a described part or design into a printable model and slice it.
- Send a print job to a supported printer through an AI client.
- Check printer and job progress, including camera monitoring.
- Connect an AI client to printer workflows through MCP.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents a standard setup that includes `kiln signin` and a separate manual MCP configuration that does not require sign-in. Its Claude Desktop bundle route uses `uv` and requires terms acceptance.
- Confirm that your AI client supports MCP; automatic setup is documented for Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Codex.
- Check that the printer and connection route fit the listed ecosystems and interfaces, including OctoPrint, Moonraker/Klipper, PrusaLink or direct USB.
- The repository identifies Python and an AGPL-3.0 license; the Claude Desktop bundle has a separate
uv-based setup path.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Connect Kiln to an MCP client
Install Kiln and connect it to a supported AI client using the documented command-line setup.
Before you start
- Python package installation with pip
- Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, or another MCP-capable client
- For the standard setup path, a Kiln account
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install kiln3dRun
kiln signinto create or access an account, then runkiln install-mcpto connect Kiln to supported AI apps.Restart the AI app so it can use Kiln. For another MCP client, use
kiln install-mcp --printor enter the documented manual MCP configuration.
Expected outcome
The MCP client is configured to access Kiln's 3D-printing tools.
Guide limitations
- The documented automatic setup covers Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Codex; other clients require printed or manual MCP configuration.
- The repository's separate Claude Desktop bundle path requires
uvand acceptance of Kiln's terms.
