Practical overview
When it fits
Use Jumble when you want a Nostr feed-browsing client or need an instance whose starting relay feeds are configured by its operator.
Who it is for
- Nostr users who want to explore relay feeds.
- Community operators who want an instance to open with selected relay sets and additional relays.
- Developers who want to run or build the client locally or as an Electron desktop app.
Documented uses
- Browse Nostr relay feeds in a client.
- Set administrator-selected relay groups as the default feeds for an instance.
- Run the client locally, in Docker Compose, or as an Electron desktop build.
Requirements & limits
The project documents a hosted web app at jumble.social, local development, Docker Compose, and Electron desktop builds. The repository identifies the software as MIT-licensed.
- Community relay defaults are set by administrators; visitors cannot delete preset relay sets or remove additional default relays.
- The Electron desktop build runs relay WebSockets in the main process and stores secrets through Electron safeStorage in the operating system keychain.
- Docker instructions give localhost:8089 as the access address; production hosting configuration is not covered in those instructions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start Jumble locally for development
Install the project dependencies and start the development app.
Before you start
- A cloned Jumble repository
- npm installed
Steps
Clone https://github.com/CodyTseng/jumble.git and change into the jumble directory.
Run npm install.
Run npm run dev.
Expected outcome
The documented local development command starts the app.
Guide limitations
- This recipe covers local development, not a production deployment.
Set community relay defaults
Configure preset relay sets and additional relays for a community instance.
Before you start
- A Jumble project checkout
- A root-level .env file
- Relay URLs to include in the defaults
Steps
Set VITE_COMMUNITY_RELAY_SETS in .env to define one or more preset groups, each with an id, name and relayUrls.
Optionally set VITE_COMMUNITY_RELAYS to a comma-separated list of additional relay URLs.
Run the instance using a documented Jumble setup method.
Expected outcome
The first preset group is displayed by default, and configured additional relays are added to preset relay sets.
Guide limitations
- Visitors cannot delete relay sets preset by administrators or remove the additional default relays.
- The setup instructions do not describe production hosting or deployment configuration.
