Agent Frameworks

Jazz

Jazz is an open-source TypeScript agent harness that lets builders define AI agents in JSON and run them through terminal, scripting, scheduling, CI and chat surfaces. Its configuration covers primary and companion models, persona, tools and permissions; the runtime supplies the agent loop and guardrails.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Jazz when an agent needs to operate beyond a single chat window, especially when the same configuration should serve interactive terminal use, scripts, scheduled jobs, CI or a bot.

Who it is for

  • Developers building unattended AI agents.
  • Teams automating repository, file, web or scheduled workflows.
  • Builders who want one agent configuration available through multiple interfaces.
  • Users connecting supported model providers or self-hosted model servers.

Documented uses

  • Configure an agent with a chosen persona, models, tools and permissions.
  • Run one-off requests from a terminal or script.
  • Schedule recurring agent workflows.
  • Review GitHub pull requests through an action workflow.
  • Expose an agent through supported chat integrations.

Requirements & limits

The repository documents a self-contained binary installer and an npm installation path. First-run provider setup is required. It lists hosted providers and self-hosted options, including Ollama; provider-specific credentials or server requirements apply where documented.

  • JSON configuration controls models, persona, tools and permissions in one place.
  • The same agent can be exposed through terminal, scripts, schedules, CI and several chat integrations.
  • Guardrails and approval prompts are part of the documented runtime model.
  • Companion models can handle image, audio or video capabilities separately from the primary model.
  • External services such as email, search and Obsidian require additional configuration.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Jazz and complete first-run provider setup

Prepare Jazz for a first interactive agent session.

Before you start

  • A supported environment for the Jazz self-contained binary, or npm with Node.js available.
  • An AI provider selected during the first-run setup; the project also documents Ollama for self-hosted models.

Steps

  1. Install the binary with the documented install script, or install the jazz-ai npm package globally.

  2. Start Jazz with jazz.

  3. Complete the provider setup wizard shown on first run.

  4. Use the terminal prompt for a documented first task such as summarising a local PDF, reviewing recent commits or fetching a web page.

Expected outcome

Jazz is installed and the terminal agent can receive the documented example requests after provider setup.

Guide limitations

  • The guide documents installation and first-run setup; provider-specific account, key and server requirements vary.
  • The examples depend on access to the referenced local files, Git history or web resource.
