Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a local proof-of-concept environment for exploring IoT interaction through a smart contract, rather than a production-ready device service.
Who it is for
- Developers exploring how a web app, Ethereum smart contract and IoT device can be connected.
- Learners using a local sandbox to study Flask, Web3.py, Solidity and Hardhat together.
- Raspberry Pi users interested in the project's optional GPIO control path.
Documented uses
- Interact with an IoT device through the browser-based app.
- Explore smart-contract-mediated device interaction on a local blockchain.
- Study or adapt the components of a Python and Ethereum IoT demonstration.
Requirements & limits
The documented use is a locally run app opened at http://localhost:8000. The repository is public and licensed under MIT.
- The blockchain is started locally with Hardhat; the documented workflow does not describe using a public Ethereum network.
- Node.js 22+ and Python 3+ are prerequisites.
- A Raspberry Pi is optional and specified for actual GPIO control.
- The project is explicitly experimental, not production-ready, and not audited or security-tested.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and open the local IoT demo
Start the documented local blockchain and Flask app, then open the web interface.
Before you start
- Node.js 22 or later
- Python 3 or later
- A Raspberry Pi only if using actual GPIO control
Steps
Install the project dependencies with npm install.
Start the local blockchain with npx hardhat node.
In a separate terminal, compile the contract with npx hardhat compile.
Install Python dependencies from requirements.txt and start the app with python app.py.
Open http://localhost:8000 in a browser.
Expected outcome
The local web app is available in a browser for interacting with the IoT device; actual GPIO control is associated with optional Raspberry Pi hardware.
Guide limitations
- The project describes itself as experimental proof-of-concept software and not ready for production use.
- The README says it has not been audited or security-tested.
