Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an MCP-connected agent needs a browser for navigation, interaction or extraction, particularly on sites where anti-bot checks or captchas may affect ordinary automation.
Who it is for
- Developers building MCP-connected AI agents.
- Teams creating browser automation or scraping workflows.
- Builders of research, lead-generation or job-search assistants that need browser interaction.
Documented uses
- Browse websites through an MCP-compatible assistant.
- Automate multi-step browser interactions with Playwright.
- Extract information from webpages for research, lead generation or job search.
- Support computer-use workflows in an AI agent.
Requirements & limits
The project is available as a public GitHub repository and is MIT-licensed. Repository documentation includes Windows PowerShell and Linux shell usage. No pricing or primary-service account requirement is documented here.
- Your assistant or agent framework must support MCP.
- The workflow should be compatible with Playwright and Firefox-based browser automation.
- Stealth or anti-bot-oriented browser behavior is a central project distinction.
- The repository is Python-based, which matters for implementation and maintenance choices.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Invisible Playwright MCP in a supported assistant
Install the MCP browser agent for use through Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI.
Before you start
- Windows PowerShell or Linux shell
- An MCP-compatible assistant
Steps
Install uv: run the documented PowerShell installer and add its local bin directory to PATH on Windows, or run the documented curl installer and source
$HOME/.local/bin/envon Linux. For Claude Code, add the
feder-cr/invisible_playwright_mcpmarketplace and installinvisible-playwright-mcp@feder-cr.For Codex, add the
feder-cr/invisible_playwright_mcpmarketplace and addinvisible-playwright-mcp@feder-cr.For Gemini CLI, install the extension from
https://github.com/feder-cr/invisible_playwright_mcp.Use the installed assistant to access the browser agent over MCP.
Expected outcome
The browser agent is installed in the documented assistant integration path and is ready for MCP-based use.
Guide limitations
- The documentation does not provide a verification command or a complete assistant-side configuration for every client.
- The browser engine is downloaded from a GitHub release when the server first starts.
- Use must follow the terms and rate limits of sites visited, and submissions should be reviewed by a human.
Start the standalone Invisible Playwright MCP web UI
Launch the local web interface and open its live browser view.
Before you start
- Windows PowerShell or Linux shell
- An OpenRouter API key
Steps
Install uv using the documented Windows PowerShell or Linux commands.
On Windows, run
uvx invisible-playwright-mcp ui --openrouter-key sk-or-...; on Linux, run the corresponding documented command.Open
http://127.0.0.1:8765.Enter a browser task in the chat interface.
Expected outcome
The local interface provides chat on the left and a live browser on the right for web-automation requests.
Guide limitations
- The documented command places the key in shell history and, on Linux, in the process list; the documentation also supports
OPENROUTER_API_KEYor a local.envfile. - Changing the host exposes an interface with no authentication.
- The interface sends the conversation and page content read by the agent to OpenRouter under the supplied key.
- The documentation does not establish that a particular browsing task will succeed against any site.
