Practical overview
When it fits
Use Instrukt when you want to build or operate agents from a terminal and ground their answers in an indexed codebase or document directory.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to prototype or customize terminal-based AI agents.
- Users who want an agent to retrieve answers from indexed code or documents.
Documented uses
- Create and instruct modular agents in natural language.
- Build or attach tools to tailor an agent's workflow.
- Index a directory and connect it to an agent for retrieval-based question-answering.
Requirements & limits
The documented quickstart requires an OpenAI API key. The repository specifies the AGPL-3.0 license.
- The interface is terminal-based, with remote access described through SSH and terminal multiplexers.
- The documented stack includes Python, LangChain, Textual and Chroma.
- OpenAI is the documented language-model provider; local embedding models are supported, but private local language models are listed as future work.
- The README identifies the project as a work in progress and warns of bugs and API changes.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and launch Instrukt
Install the package, configure the documented OpenAI credential and start the terminal environment.
Before you start
- Python package installation support
- An OpenAI API key
- For a bare container, g++ and libmagic
Steps
Install with the command below.
pip install instrukt[all]Set the
OPENAI_API_KEYenvironment variable to your OpenAI API key.Run
instruktto launch the terminal interface.
Expected outcome
The Instrukt terminal environment launches and creates a configuration file at `~/.config/instrukt/instrukt.yml`.
Guide limitations
- The README describes the project as a work in progress and warns of bugs and API changes.
- The documented language-model support is OpenAI.
Index a codebase for agent question-answering
Create a directory index and connect it to an agent for retrieval-based questions about code.
Before you start
- Instrukt installed and launched
- An OpenAI API key for the documented quickstart
- A local code directory to index
Steps
Open the Index Management interface with
I.Create an index from the directory containing the code.
Use the index menu in an agent window to attach the index as a retrieval tool.
Ask the agent questions about the indexed code.
Expected outcome
The agent can retrieve material from the code index when answering questions.
Guide limitations
- The README documents indexing directories; loading a Git repository from a URL is listed as future work.
- The project is described as a work in progress.
