Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when drafting or researching from a personal file collection and you want to inspect where an AI answer came from before incorporating it into notes.
Who it is for
- People who need to question and write from their own document collections.
- Researchers and readers who want source-linked answers for literature review and note-taking.
Documented uses
- Ask questions about documents or the current topic notebook and inspect the cited pages.
- Add sourced answers to a draft and edit them alongside personal notes.
- Organize and search document collections, including folders of supported file types.
- Import references, add research papers or save web pages as sources.
- Export a notebook with citations and a selected bibliography style.
Requirements & limits
The README describes IncarnaMind as not yet released. It says users can try it by running from source with Node.js 24 or newer; planned installers are described for macOS, Windows and Linux. The project describes itself as free and open source under Apache-2.0.
- Citation checks compare quoted passages with their cited sources; the app marks failed checks as unverified rather than presenting them as passed.
- Model access can use a ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan, a provider API key, or a local model through Ollama.
- The documented file formats include PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, CSV, Markdown and plain text.
- The source-running route requires Node.js 24 or newer; documented installer caveats vary by operating system.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
