Image Studio

Image Studio is a browser-based visual creation application for generating images from text, editing uploaded images, making illustrated explainers and comic strips, and converting still images into short videos. It uses Google Gemini, Imagen and Veo models, stores creation history in browser IndexedDB, and uses FFmpeg.wasm for video stitching.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Image Studio when a visual task calls for more than text-to-image generation—for example, when you need to edit an existing image, build a sequence of illustrated cards or comic panels, or make a short video from a still image.

Who it is for

  • People creating visual explanations from concepts or questions.
  • Artists and storytellers making AI-assisted images, comic panels or short videos.
  • Developers who want to run or adapt a React and TypeScript visual-creation project.

Documented uses

  • Turn a concept or question into illustrated explanatory cards.
  • Generate a multi-panel comic from a story script and convert its still panels into video.
  • Create images from text or edit, restyle, extend or locally repaint an uploaded image.
  • Animate a still image using a motion description and camera-motion choice.
  • Keep a searchable local history of creations and export or import it as JSON.

Requirements & limits

The README says a Google Gemini API key is required and can be entered in the app or configured through an environment variable. It notes that free keys may not provide access to some models, including Imagen. The repository documents a modern-browser workflow and a Vercel deployment option.

  • Model access depends on the configured Google Gemini API key; the README specifically cautions that free keys may not support Imagen.
  • History is stored locally in IndexedDB; JSON import and export are available for backup or transfer.
  • The documented stack includes React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Google Gemini API, FFmpeg.wasm and IndexedDB.
  • The public repository is licensed under MIT.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare Image Studio for local development

Configure a Gemini API key and start the documented local development server.

Before you start

  • A modern browser
  • A Google Gemini API key
  • The project repository and its documented development environment

Steps

  1. Clone or otherwise obtain the Image Studio repository.

  2. For environment-based configuration, copy .env.local.example to .env.local and set VITE_GEMINI_API_KEY to your key; alternatively, enter the key in the application when prompted.

  3. Run the command below as documented in the README.

    Documented command
    npm run dev
  4. Open the local address shown in the README: http://localhost:5173.

Expected outcome

The development server is configured to serve the browser-based application locally.

Guide limitations

  • A configured key does not guarantee access to every model; the README says free keys may not support Imagen.
  • These are documented setup steps, not a verified execution or compatibility test.
